Excerpt From Meditation – with insect guide

Sketching
the weed, climbing
the vertical stem with my eyes

I follow the beetle’s
slip-dash path dizzily close
to the sawtooth edge of brightness

in a brief breeze
we shiver together, cling
tightly as we swing on the surface

surprised all at once to arrive
here, now, at the busy intersection
of green and more green – such iridescent
choices

a whole continent
spread out before us, veined
rivers meander – still green – a ridged

central mountain chain
slopes down into shadows, widens
to fan outward toward the coastal regions

beyond whose jagged shores
gilt by the sun, are
oceans of air

the drop back down
to ground again, is to a plane
where everything in sight has grown

immense.
